Malayala Ayurveda Vaidyasala was founded in Singapore in the year 1932 by Sri Govindan Vaidyar.
In 1941, his nephew, the late Shri Appu Vaidyar, came to Singapore to work as a apprentice at the Vaidyasala (ayurvedic clinic). That was the start of Shri Appu Vaidyar’s formal Ayurvedic education via Gurukulavasam (teacher-disciple education).
In 1947, after his uncle retired, Shri Appu Vaidyar assumed overall responsibility of the vaidyasala. During his 60 years as an ayurvedic physician, Shri Appu vaidyar treated thousands of patients not only from Singapore and Malaysia but also from the other parts of the world.
On 15 Nov 2005, at the age of 84, Shri Appu Vaidyar left us. Since then, his wife Mrs Leela Appoo has been managing the centre. In 2013, Shri Appu Vaidyar’s youngest son, Mr Mahesh co-managed the running of the vaidyasala.
We do not have any other branches in Singapore or abroad. We only operate from our registered address found on this website.
Therapeutic Massage Treatments &
Other Ayurvedic Treatment Modalities
Abhyangam
Ayurvedic massage, or Abhyangam, involves the use of warm, herbal oils selected based on the individual's dosha imbalance. A poultice filled with medicinal powders, known as Podikizhi, is used in conjunction with Abhyanga to enhance its therapeutic effects.
Navarakizhi
Navarakizhi is an Ayurvedic therapy that involves the application of warm rice boluses to the body. The rice is cooked with a herbal decoction and milk, then tied into small bundles or boluses. These boluses are used to massage the body in a systematic manner.
Kativasti
Kativasti is a therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda where warm medicated oil is retained on the lower back within a specially crafted herbal dough ring. This treatment targets the lumbar-sacral region and is highly effective for addressing issues related to the lower back and spine.
Januvasti
Januvasti is a therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda where warm medicated oil is retained on the knee joints within a specially crafted herbal dough ring. This treatment is particularly beneficial for addressing issues related to the knees, such as pain, stiffness, and inflammation.
Shirodhara
Shirodhara, a traditional Ayurvedic therapy, involves pouring a continuous stream of warm, medicated oil or liquids over the forehead's "third eye" area. Renowned for its calming effects on the nervous system, it promotes mental clarity and emotional balance effectively.
Thakaradhara
Thakaradhara, an Ayurvedic therapy, involves pouring a continuous stream of medicated buttermilk over the forehead's "third eye" area. This treatment, a variation of Shirodhara, calms the mind, cools the body, and addresses Pitta dosha imbalances effectively.
What’s In Our Name?
Ayurveda Vaidyasala (meaning ‘place where Ayurveda in practiced’) is the traditional term used for the modern day ‘clinic’. Centaury old Ayurvedic establishments in India still bear this name
When our Vaidyasala first opened its doors at 251 Serangoon Road in 1932, we not only offered Ayurvedic consultations but also manufactured and sold classical Ayurvedic medicines.

Kottakkal is a town in the Malappuram district of Kerala, renowned as the birthplace of Arya Vaidya Sala, a century-old institution that pioneered the production of Ayurvedic medicines. Arya Vaidya Sala has built a reputation for excellence by adhering to traditional Ayurvedic principles, employing meticulous preparation processes, and using only the highest quality natural ingredients. Today, “Kottakkal” is synonymous with authentic, high-quality Ayurvedic medicine.
Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala (AVS) does not have any branches in Asia. As of 2024, they have 27 branches located across India. If you need help identifying these locations, please feel free to contact us.
Kottakkal medicines are GMP certified, with stringent quality control measures in place throughout and after the manufacturing process. Their formulations are grounded in ancient Ayurvedic “yogas” or texts, some dating back over 2,000 years, reflecting a long history of traditional use and effectiveness.
Results may vary from person to person, as Ayurveda recognizes that the same illness can manifest differently in individuals. This is why we encourage customers to consult with our Vaidyar (physician) before starting any medication, to ensure the medicine is tailored to their unique needs.
All of our massage therapy and treatment sessions are available by appointment only. To schedule your session, please call us at 6293 2760 during our business hours. We do not take appointment booking via WhatsApp.
To respect everyone’s time, we are unable to extend therapy or treatment sessions if you arrive late, as this would be unfair to the next patient who arrives on time. Please plan your visit carefully to ensure a timely arrival. If you are late by 5 or 10 minutes, only the remaining time in your session will be available, and the full session fee will still apply.
To operate our center, we are required to obtain accreditation from CaseTrust and a Massage Establishment License from the Singapore Police Force (SPF). In compliance with their rules and regulations, we must record certain details, such as your full name, IC or passport number, and nationality, when you book a therapy session. Unfortunately, if you are unable to provide these details, we will not be able to offer our services. Thank you for your understanding.
